About Us

Our Historic Beginnings

Providence Missionary Baptist Church – Gonzales, Texas

Founded in 1874, Providence Missionary Baptist Church holds the distinction of being the oldest Black Baptist church in Gonzales, Texas.

Its sacred journey began beneath the shade of an oak tree on the lawn of the late J.C. Dilworth, at the corner of St. Lawrence and Church Streets, where Rev. Mitchell Harrison gathered a faithful few to worship and organize what would become a lasting spiritual home.

In those early days, the congregation worshiped beneath a humble brush arbor—a testament to their unwavering faith and resilience. As the church grew, two lots were purchased along the Old Spanish Trail (now known as St. Andrew Street), where a permanent sanctuary was built, anchoring Providence in the heart of the community.

From those roots to today, Providence continues to stand as a pillar of hope, heritage, and service

Our Story

Providence Missionary Baptist Church

At Providence Missionary Baptist Church, our story is one of faith, service, and unwavering love for our family. Rooted in the Word of God and guided by the Holy Spirit, we have grown from a local congregation into a beacon of hope for families, seniors, veterans, and individuals in need.

Our mission goes beyond Sunday sermons—we believe in living the Gospel through action. That’s why we partnered with Pam’s Kitchen Serving the Community, a local nonprofit founded by one of our own, to extend our reach and deepen our impact.

Together, we operate a Food and Clothing Pantry, offering essential support to senior citizens, disabled individuals, veterans, and the homeless. Each week, we serve meals, distribute clothing, and provide comfort with dignity and compassion.

During the holidays, our ministry expands:

  • We prepare and deliver Thanksgiving Food Boxes to families facing hardship.

  • We have adopted a local nursing home, bringing joy and warmth through Christmas gift bags filled with love and care.

Our story is still unfolding—with every prayer, every act of kindness, and every soul we touch. We are a church committed to serving, uplifting, and walking in purpose, and we welcome all to be part of this journey.
